The History of KEEE Web Radio

KEEE Web Radio was one of the first internet radio stations in the world.

Before iPods, before podcasts, before YouTube and social media, there was KEEE.

KEEE Web Radio started in 1996 in Port Angeles WA, by its founder and DJ Josh. "The Key" was first broadcast August 17th, 1996 over a 28.8 modem off a personal web page. The broadcast was less than 5 minutes long and contained one song. As our following grew (and technology advanced) we began to do longer shows, based more on listener requests.

KEEE Radio eventually moved to Seattle WA, and became an ALL request web radio station. We began broadcasting in stereo quality, and our shows were known to go on for hours. When bandwidth supported streaming, we became a LIVE broadcast, and encouraged people to interact with the DJs as much as they wanted to. Our motto of playing nearly any song request we received made us one of the most versatile and fun stations on the web or anywhere.

KEEE cracked a million listeners in 1998, and reached 4 million people during our peak in 2002. We experienced brief success with our show being rebroadcasted during overnights on a terrestrial radio station in Canada, and once turned down an offer to host our crazy show on Satellite radio. KEEE was always best on the web.

In 2010, John S, the longtime cohost of KEEE Web Radio passed away, and we haven’t done a show since. Eventually, services like Spotify, Pandora and podcasts replaced internet radio, and listeners found other ways to listen to music online. A return of the KEEE Web Radio show is unlikely, but we will never say never.

This website was archived in October 2025, and KEEE will return if the world needs us again.
